Protein is simply amino acids that are bonded together with peptides. Think of peptides as the glue of what sticks the amino acids together. There are over 80 amino acids, however the human body only uses 20 of them. Out of those 20, there are 11 that are non-essential amino acids. Non-essential are amino acids that your body naturally produces. The remaining 9 amino acids are what we call essential amino acids, which is also known as "EAA's". Essential amino acids are amino acids that your body would have to get from an outside source, like food(chicken, beef, eggs, etc) and/or supplements. Out of those 9 amino acids that your body needs, there are only 3 critical amino acids that play a huge role when it comes to recovery & building lean muscle mass. We refer to these as "BCAA's". Those three amino acids are L-Luecine, L-Isoleucine, & L-Valine. BCAA's are key for modulating protein synthesis where your body is going to use energy to build cells aka more lean muscle mass resulting in more calories burned. The more lean muscle mass a person has, the more calories they burn, making it more effective to lose unwanted body fat. Your body is either in a Anabolism state (a state where your body uses energy to create/build lean muscle mass) OR in a Catabolism state (a state where your body breaks down lean muscle mass to create energy). BCAA's increases your probability of being in a Anabolism state. You want to be in the Anabolism state.
So whether your goal is to build lean muscle mass, maintain, or lose a few pounds of body fat, it is important for you to know why and how these things work rather than a "oh yeah, take this it works" statement & not understanding why.
So one might ask, "what is the main difference between protein & BCAA's? Can't I can just get it all from my food, including vitamins given the information mentioned?" YES, 100%. However, consuming all that from food is tough for most. That is where supplements come in. They are made to HELP supplement your program for what your body needs. They are not meant to replace all of your food. Protein(Food or supplement) comes in a complete form of all 9 essential amino acids that the body needs bonded with the peptides to keep them together. So, when you consume protein (food or supplement), your liver has to break them down(metabolize) before having it available for fuel (that takes time). On the other hand, taking a BCAA as a stand-alone(the main three: L-Luecine, L-Isoleucine, & L-Valine), it naturally by-passes the liver and metabolizes in your muscles giving your muscles the fuel it needs a lot faster if not right away.
